William Etty: Art and
Controversy.
The life and works of William Etty R.A. (1787-1849), one of Britain's most
significant yet controversial artists, is explored in this groundbreaking
exhibition.
The exhibition offers the first comprehensive reassessment of Etty's in over
50 years. Crucially, it explores Etty's equivocal status, from stalwart of
the Royal Academy - elected to be an Academician ahead of John Constable - to
being exiled from the artistic elite for what was seen as a 'perverse'
passion for the voluptuousness of the female nude.
The exhibition includes more than 100 works, from the sensitive delicate
studies the artist made in the life class, to ambitious, richly coloured
historical canvases.
Four themes are explored, all central to Etty's artistic practice. Art and
Controversy focuses on his ambitious historical, literary and
mythological works; Etty and the Masters reassesses his 'memorials' to
the Old Masters; The Life Class highlights his interest in the Nude
and studies he made at the Royal Academy and finally Portraiture,
which features the portraits by the artist of his friends and York
acquaintances, together with major metropolitan commissions.

The Art of Advertising: Posters
& Paintings by Royal Academy Artists 1924.
In 1924 the London, Midland & Scottish Railway Company took on the
emerging specialism of graphic design, asking: can fine artists create
successful posters?
By commissioning paintings from Royal Academy artists and reproducing them as
posters, the campaign - suggested by noted poster artist Norman Wilkinson -
aimed to raise the company's profile by aligning them with "all that
is good in British Art".
Many of the original paintings and posters can be seen alongside other works
by the artists, in The Art of Advertising: Posters & Paintings by
Royal Academy Artists in the National Railway Museum's new gallery.
This exhibition will look at how far the Royal Academicians adapted their
usual styles to the LMS commission and how successful the resulting posters
are.

York's loudest, wackiest panto
returns for it's 33rd year - Berwick Kaler in The York Family Robinson
Written by Berwick Kaler. Directed by Berwick Kaler and Damian Cruden.
From York to Whitby and then on to Australia, but will the comically
dysfunctional "York Family Robinson" ever reach their final
destination?
Join them as they challenge the world's most treacherous waters in a
desperate attempt to find the only living link with the beginning of time.
Laugh yourself silly as they encounter dastardly fey pirates and find
themselves shipwrecked on No Man's Land (inhabited solely by beautiful girls
- well, until they're joined by the dame!).

Games People Play.
This small exhibition, curated by members of the community, shows the games
people have played over the years and the way these have been depicted by
artists.
Community groups from around York have worked with curators, artists and
creative writers to interpret images and objects from York Museums Trust's
collections.
Many of the images can be used to reflect on broader issues from the times in
which they were made.

Tom Russell - Tom Russell is a
master storyteller and Mesabi, his new release, corrals some of the
acclaimed singer-songwriter's most compelling tales to date.
A thread runs through its songs, a zigzagging but determinedly solid line
that connects the perilous bordertown of Juarez, Mexico to the real and faux
glitz of L.A. and the bleak iron range of Minnesota—the Mesabi of the album's
title. The broad landscapes created for Mesabi are inhabited by characters we
all know—Bob Dylan, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor—and some we may not.
Russell is an outstanding exponent of Americana who simply should not be
missed!
“Tom Russell is Johnny Cash, Jim Harrison and Charles Bukowski rolled into
one. I feel a great affinity with Tom Russell's songs, for he is writing out
of the wounded heart of America.” Lawrence Ferlinghetti (A Coney

York Farmers Market - The York Farmers Market was one of the first to be
established in the north of England in the Autumn of 1999. The success as the
forerunner to this movement in the north has led to a large number of other
markets opening up in the area and, more importantly, created an alternative
source of income to many farmers and producers.
The main benefit of the farmers market here at Murton is that it is all under
cover come rain, snow or high wind with a large private car park adjacent.
There is always seasonal activity and special events at the markets, adding
extra value and interest.
The main principle of the farmers market is that it is local producers
selling fresh quality produce direct to local consumers in an atmosphere
which promotes dialogue and understanding of food production including
environmental and welfare standards. This cuts down food miles and puts money
back into the local economy rather than imported goods.
The market always offers an extensive range of produce including:-
Yorkshire beef, lamb & pork;
Organic vegetables;
Free range chicken & eggs;
Fresh handmade bread & cakes;
Pastries;
Fish;
Sausages;
Soups;
Preserves & much more...
A fantastic choice of fresh quality local produce at very competitive prices
and the benefit of knowing where it's come from and how it's been produced.

Gerard Lee Bevan was the black sheep of one of London's most respectable
banking families. A high-living womaniser and upper class rogue, he exploited
a glittering range of social connections. After a long run of success in City
dealings he perpetrated a massive fraud for which he was eventually jailed.
An extraordinary and compelling true-crime tale rich in early 20th Century
social detail. Followed by tea and book signing at Knipes Hall.

York Barbican presents - Thin
Lizzy plus special guests Clutch.
Thin Lizzy is one of rock music’s most recognizable names. The fiery Dublin
band exploded onto the scene with a fresh sound, look and attitude. Lead by
the incomparable Phil Lynott, the band reached many peaks and influenced
generations of musicians with classic tracks such as Jailbreak and The
Boys Are Back In Town.
Twenty five years have passed, the world has changed, but the amazing body of
work that is Thin Lizzy still retains all of its vibrancy and influence.
A new lineup has formed to take Lizzy’s music to a whole new generation of
music fans. Led by alumni Scott Gorham, Brian Downey and Darren Wharton (all
of whom played in Thin Lizzy with Phil Lynott) the stellar lineup is
completed by Guns N Roses Richard Fortus (guitar), Bassist Marco Mendoza
(Whitesnake, Ted Nugent) and The Almighty’s Ricky Warwick on vocals and
guitar.

Today - 'Can a robot have an immune system?' with Speaker: Professor
Jon Timmis.
Animals and plants have an immune system to keep them healthy. Robots go
wrong and become "unhealthy" very easily. What would it mean for a
robot, or even a "swarm" of robots, to have an immune system? In
this lecture, we will explore immunity in the natural world and how we might
translate the idea of immunity into robotic systems to allow them to work
even when things might go wrong. Along the way, we will discuss some of the
problems in getting such ideas to work in robots, and demonstrate a few of
the robots we own here at York, including if they behave themselves, some of
our flying robots.
Admission by free ticket only, available from www.york.ac.uk/tickets.

York Concerts present John Taylor piano.
John Taylor first made his mark on the jazz scene in the 1970s when he
collaborated with the likes of Cleo Laine, Ronnie Scott, Jan Garbarek and
Kenny Wheeler. As a solo performer and with his own trio, John Taylor is at
the pinnacle of his career with a sophisticated and sensitive style that
appeals to lovers of classical and jazz repertoire alike. In this solo
concert he features music by Kenny Wheeler alongside his own pieces and
standards.
‘Taylor played as if the piano were his orchestra, always intriguing and
filled with sumptuous chords, groove-alerting cross-rhythms and nimble lines.
His playing is strikingly original and immediate, as if the piano has
revealed all kinds of secrets to him that are kept from most other musicians.’

The Milton Rooms presents Music in
the Studio - Me & My Friends.
Presenting an imaginative blend of folk, reggae and old-time roots, Me and My
Friends seamlessly combine disparate styles into an entrancing, delightful,
basking-in-the-sunshine whole. Gentle folk melodies sit alongside syncopated
rhythms from all over, mixing nylon-string guitar, cello, clarinet and
layered vocals in often unusual but always utterly charming ways. These
unlikely crossings are held together by imaginative musicianship, youthful
energy and a heavy dose of blazing sunshine.
Sharing stages with the likes of Jesca Hoop, Alessi's Ark, Hannah Peel and
the Duke Special, and garnering rave reviews all over, the group are sure to
raise a smile, get some hips shaking and leave you feeling revitalised!
