| The city thrived from Norman times as one of the great ports and trading centres of Britain. Water still gives it a unique character - whether it is the drama of the Avon Gorge or the old dock areas of the very heart of the city. The Norman based cathedral founded in 1140 on the legendary site where St Augustine met early Christian in the 7th century. Bristol suffered heavy war damage but despite this many outstanding buildings remain which are well worth a visit. |
